Morphettville Park Juniors SA

Ever since Rod started coaching me, I have began training and playing at a much higher level, however the biggest addition that Rod brought to Morphettville Park was the attitude to others and yourselves.
On the very first training after he introduced himself to the team, he made it very evident that he was only focussed on sportsmanship, respect and trying your hardest.

We applied lots of small gestures to show our respect to opponents, umpires, teammates, and coaches, so we would greet Rod before and after trainings and games and shake hands with opponents to say, ‘good luck’.

After games when we line up to shake hands, we respect the other team no matter the result, shake their hands, then we go and thank the umpires, then give a bag of lollies to both the umpires and to the opposition team.

Rod taught us all of these gestures that show our respect for others and encourages us to Learn Life Through Sport.
In our first season, we struggled quite a bit, however towards the end of the season we beat some of the top teams, and we knew that this was the start of a good group.

The next two years, for every game, we continued to use the key points, and it eventually led to us winning two flags, with us gaining respect from opposition teams.

When you have a coach like Rod, you find yourself improving out of sight, and you become a better person on and off the pitch, so if his work and ideas were expanded to the whole league, then football would be more enjoyable for everyone.

Rod’s insight has led us to two grand final wins, and this proves that you can be respectful and show good sportsmanship, but still have success, and you enjoy it more.

All of the team has taken these key points to our life, and we have always been able to take these lessons away from football, and Rod has helped us kids develop into better people"

When I heard that Rod was introducing a ‘Learning Life through Sport’ to the sports community, my first thought was there was no finer person in SA to deliver this powerful message and achieve the right results.

This is Rod’s absolute passion and he truly lives what he teaches on every level.

As a back-to-back Premier coach, and winner of Junior Coach of the Year in 2022 (Glenelg zone), Rod has gained enormous respect from his peers as well as the parents & extended families of the boys he coaches.

I have watched Rod coach in several seasons of footy and have personally observed the remarkable turnaround of culture from the valuable lessons of respect & sportsmanship he has instilled in the young lads. He is continually the promoter of good character and always ‘walks the talk’

So many times I have heard commentary from umpires and other team coaches, full of praise and admiration for our team’s fair play. All credit for this lies with Rod’s impeccable integrity and strong values.

His “Learning Life through Sport” programme will lift greater awareness among parents and Club officials to reinforce the SANFL Code of Conduct message of positive behaviour.

He is very driven individual whose passion about lifelong learning will create change in the Junior sport environment through his positive and engaging programme.

I applaud Rod for this initiative. Junior Sport will prosper from the programme.
